I am writing again to urge you to take action on S1017/A2562. This bill is essential for police officers as it provides an additional retirement benefit, which PFRS supposedly already had 20 years ago as per Senator Allen, however a horrible interpretation left many PFRS members out in the dark. In these uncertain times of defunding the police, the Black Lives Matter movement, and many other social issues it may be seen as a police benefit package which may not be palatable to some of your constituents. However this bill is about mental health. This bill provides that an officer may retire at 20 years and take no health benefits for the sake of the officers own mental health. No one wants to see an officer who is burned out, on edge, and not in a right state of mind hanging onto a job just because a pension is dangling in front of their face Five years out. This would provide an officer a way to escape the job if he or she chooses to do, for the sake of their own mental health. This would not allow retirees access to healthcare and would save the state and municipalities millions of dollars in associated healthcare costs. Additionally this would ease the burden on the PFRS pension system by capping a pension benefit at 50% for the officers who choose to take this retirement route. It is imperative, now more than ever, for this legislation to be passed and sent to the governor for a signature. Thank you so much Michael A. Bartelucci
