My 20 year old daughter has a diagnosis of Down Syndrome and Autism. She requires significant support (usually 1:1 staff support ratio) and will be graduating from school in May 2023. I have been searching for a day program that she can attend when she graduates. I have learned that almost all day programs for people with disabilities will not accept a person with a disability who requires 1:1 support to attend their program. This seems to be a violation of her CIVIL rights. Discussions with other parents, reveal that this is a standard practice in the past few years. Parents are struggling to find staff to keep their adult children busy, productive and occupied 24 hours a day/7 days a week because they cannot attend a structured program. It is almost an impossible task for aging parents of children who need significant support. This is an example of discrimination against people with disabilities by programs set up to serve people with disabilities. I would be happy to talk to a legislator about this issue!
