Comments on HB 1591

Bruce Sklar wrote 5 days ago

The majority of puppies sold in pet stores come from puppy mills: intensive breeding facilities where there is little concern for the health and wellbeing of the animals. Families who purchase puppies from stores are often burdened with pet health problems that can cost thousands of dollars in veterinary visits to treat and can lead to a lifetime of medical complications. At a time when so many Arkansas shelters are overwhelmed, the state should not be forcing communities to accept the import of puppy mill puppies. It seeks to protect a cruel industry while harming animals and consumers who are so often wronged by the puppy-mill-to-pet-store pipeline. Also In addition to the animal welfare concerns, pet store puppies have also been linked to human disease outbreaks, including two superbug outbreaks of drug-resistant Campylobacter infections that resulted in dozens of people becoming so ill that they required hospitalization.
