The meeting began with a prayer led by Mims, followed by the Pledge of Allegiance. After a brief break, the quorum was confirmed. The reading of the journal was dispensed with upon a motion from Representative Powell, which passed. There were no reports from select committees, but standing committees had reports available.
Mr. Morgan from Marion requested to dispense with the reading of the introduction of bills, which was approved without objection. There were no resolutions, petitions, or memorials presented. Mr. Varner from Rankin introduced guests from Florence Middle School, including elected officers from the Student Council and their principal and assistant principal, who received a warm welcome.
Mr. Geis from Jackson moved to table House Bill 1441, which passed without opposition. He then moved to table House Bill 1442, which also passed. The chairman of rules called items 4 through 14 on the rules calendar, which were all House resolutions. These were passed without objection, and an immediate release was requested and granted.
Mr. Arnold from Prentice requested to change his vote on House Bill 1314 from nay to yay, which was approved. Mr. Hines from Washington joined in memory of Jerry Montgomery, a notable running back from Greenville High who recently passed away. Ms. James Jones from Humphreys honored Dr. Mary Washington, a long-time educator, who also recently passed.
The Speaker thanked the members for a productive week and recognized the gentleman from Rankin for a motion to adjourn. The motion to adjourn until 4 p.m. on Monday was passed.
