,
I am writing to urge you to protect Colorado’s health care safety net by voting yes on Senate Bill (SB) 25-290, which will create a new fund to bring immediate help for our struggling health care safety net. SB 25-290 will preserve access to the safety net for thousands of Coloradans. Coloradans depend on community health centers, rural clinics, comprehensive behavioral health providers, and other primary care clinics for their care. This bill provides immediate support for those providers, with funding starting in 2025-26. That is crucial, because safety net providers are currently facing dire financial conditions. SB 25-290 helps providers struggling following the Medicaid redetermination process. Following the public health emergency Medicaid unwind, 575,000 Coloradans lost their Medicaid coverage, and many of those patients are now uninsured. This puts extreme pressure on the providers who serve them and who, by law, are required to provide care regardless of an individual’s ability to pay. That meant downsizing and layoffs in clinics across the state as they tried to make up for lost payment. SB 25-290 ensures the safety net continues as a comprehensive health care system. The funding in this bill will stabilize the existing infrastructure in the short term. This is important because patients need to seek care at the right time and in the right place. If they can’t find primary or behavioral care, they often delay care and end up later in the hospital emergency room – the most expensive place to seek care. That is bad for patients and adds cost to the entire system. A strong safety net helps the entire health care system. Save our safety net NOW – vote YES on SB 25-290.
