Ensure Housing Justice for Victim-Survivors: Urge your elected officials to vote YES on HB25-1168

  • Gender-based violence (GBV) can often lead to economic hardship, legal barriers, and unsafe situations which can then lead to the loss of housing. As a result, gender-based violence is a leading cause of housing instability across Colorado. While Colorado law provides some protections, they are often difficult to access and insufficient in preventing individuals and families from facing eviction and entering the cycle of homelessness.
  • HB25-1168 aims to strengthen housing security by clarifying and enforcing lease-break protections, safeguarding security deposits from damages caused by abusers, extending the period to move out after an eviction, and increasing options for repayment of rent. To ensure due process, the bill expands options for a tenant to verify their status as a victim-survivor, ensures that types of GBV covered under the lease break law are also included in eviction defense, and improves court access for victim-survivors facing legal delays. This bill also enhances safety by allowing lock changes and suppressing eviction records to protect privacy.
  • By addressing these critical gaps, HB-1168 will provide greater housing stability, legal protection, and safety for victim-survivors of GBV in Colorado.
  • We know that when victim-survivors are able to stay in their homes and protect their financial security, this creates a more stable environment for themselves and their children. Urge your legislators to pass this bill and help victim-survivors avoid losing their homes and help them keep their families safe.
