Risk Remains for Rape Crisis Services Federal Funding
Rape crisis center funding remains in
jeopardy! A memorandum issued Monday by the Federal Office of Management and
Budget announced a pause in “all activities related to the obligation or
disbursement of all Federal financial assistance . . .” While this memo was
later rescinded, the White House Press Secretary stated it was not a rescission
of the federal funding freeze, and that Executive Orders regarding funding will
be rigorously implemented. Next steps remain unclear as the judicial system
processes challenges to this unprecedented executive action. This means funding
that supports essential counseling, advocacy, and 24/7 crisis hotlines for
sexual assault survivors, as well as many other services, is still at risk.
It is crucial to understand that the funds at
issue have already been approved by Congress. Rape crisis centers are providing
services and relying on the Federal government’s commitments to help pay for
them. Interrupting or stopping the flow of this funding would harm local
community agencies, their clients, and their staff, and have a negative impact
on the local and national economy. If a funding freeze is allowed to happen,
your community will lose essential services and many of your community members,
including rape crisis center staff, first responders, and other care providers,
may lose their jobs.
Please join us in reaching out to your Members
of Congress to express concern and ask for their help in stopping this disastrous
funding freeze by the White House.
Thank you for your support, ICASA
