Abortion Support is an Act of Lov

Bans on abortion support prevent people from getting abortions by threatening civil lawsuits or criminal punishment against those who support them. Also known as “abortion support bans,” these laws threaten civil lawsuits or punishment for a range of actions, some more vague than others. This may include helping someone travel for abortion, helping someone get an appointment with an abortion clinic, or helping someone get pills for an abortion. The version introduced in Mississippi is particularly harsh--it would impose a penalty of 20 years to life imprisonment.
While not targeting the abortion seeker themselves, bans on abortion support, like all bans, aim to stop people from getting abortions. These laws and policies increase surveillance and stigma in order to further isolate and scare anyone needing an abortion and those who support and advocate for abortion.
Recently we have seen an uptick in bills that target those who support young people under 18 seeking abortion care. Anti-abortion policymakers are calling these bills “abortion trafficking” measures. “Abortion trafficking” does not exist—it is made up by the anti-abortion movement, appropriating language we associate with harm for the purpose of inciting fear and isolating people who are seeking an abortion from those who support them.
Anti-abortion policymakers and activists are trying to stop young people from accessing abortion by stigmatizing and demonizing the people who support them. By sharing accurate information, creating public awareness, and developing a collective understanding of this emerging tactic, we will be able to better fight bans targeting abortion support.
