Legislators should oppose AB205 because it removes a critical layer of parental involvement in one of the most sensitive areas of a child's education: sex education. Under current law, Nevada requires parents to actively opt their child into these lessons, ensuring transparency and consent. AB205 would reverse that standard—automatically enrolling children unless parents proactively opt them out.
This shift places the burden on busy families to monitor and react, rather than empowering them to make deliberate choices. Opt-in policies protect parental rights, increase accountability, and reflect the clear desire of Nevada voters: more than 95% of opt-in forms are returned, proving that parents are engaged and supportive when they are informed.
Sex education is not neutral—it touches on values, beliefs, and topics that differ widely among families. Preserving opt-in is the most respectful and inclusive way to recognize those differences while still offering education to those who want it.
AB205 erodes parental authority, reduces transparency, and risks undermining trust between schools and families. Legislators should vote no.
