,
I am writing to urge you to protect patient care and Colorado hospitals and health providers by voting yes on Senate Bill (SB) 25-071 and no on SB 25-124. SB 25-071 keeps money in Colorado. This legislation would stop the national effort from the deep-pocketed pharmaceutical industry to weaken 340B. Drug companies are trying to restrict the benefits to hospitals and their communities by limiting the number of pharmacies in the program (currently more than 2,500 in Colorado) to just one per hospital. SB 25-071 increases transparency on how program money is spent while maintaining important benefits that improve access to care, reduce costs, and help keep local hospitals and health centers viable. Without it, many patients will struggle to get the critical health services they need. SB 25-124 gives money to Big Pharma. Championed by Big Pharma, SB 25-124 undermines the 340B program. It places reporting requirements on care providers that are so burdensome, it would make participating in the program untenable. With fewer communities benefitting from the 340B program, all those savings go right back to Big Pharma’s pockets. What is 340B? Created by Congress more than 30 years ago, the 340B program enables health care providers to stretch scarce federal resources as far as possible to care for more patients and provide more comprehensive services in their communities. The 340B program is an essential lifeline for Colorado hospitals, nearly 90% of which operate with low or negative profit margins. It allows 68 participating Colorado hospitals to provide low-cost access to prescription drugs, health care and financial assistance programs for low-income patients, and supports important care programs like cancer screenings, substance abuse treatments, and maternal health – all without costing taxpayers a cent. Vote to support our care and our communities. Vote YES on SB 24-071 and NO on SB 25-124. Coloradans cannot afford to see the program weakened through unnecessary restrictions that create barriers for low-income and vulnerable patients in the name of increased profits for Big Pharma. It is up to you to safeguard the 340B program and protect patients and health care providers.
