1 Relating to: recognizing October 26, 2023, as Intersex Awareness Day in Wisconsin.
2 Whereas, Intersex Awareness Day is recognized on October 26 in honor of the
3 first public demonstration by intersex people in the United States at the annual
4 conference of the American Academy of Pediatrics on October 26, 1996; and
5 Whereas, “intersex” refers to individuals born with variations in their physical
6 or biological sex characteristics, including genital anatomy, reproductive organs,
7 hormonal variations, or chromosomal patterns; and
8 Whereas, since the first Intersex Awareness Day in 1996, it has become a day
9 during which intersex people and allies come together to celebrate and uplift the
10 intersex community; and
11 Whereas, approximately 1.7 percent of people are born with intersex traits; and
12 Whereas, intersex people are often stigmatized and subjected to
13 discrimination; and
14 Whereas, intersex babies and children are often subject to unnecessary and
15 involuntary surgeries at a young age to make their bodies conform to traditional

1 notions of what it means to be male or female, although these interventions may
2 result in lasting physical and mental harm; and
3 Whereas, medical practices should respect the human rights and bodily
4 autonomy of all people, and government institutions should implement policies that
5 protect and support intersex people; and
6 Whereas, people born with intersex traits are an important part of the diversity
7 of our state and should be afforded equal dignity and respect; now, therefore, be it
8 Resolved by the assembly, the senate concurring, That the Wisconsin
9 Legislature does hereby recognize October 26, 2023, to be Intersex Awareness Day
10 in Wisconsin.
