1 Relating to: recognizing May 2023 as Law Enforcement Appreciation Month in
2 Wisconsin.
3 Whereas, every year since 1963, National Police Week is observed in May along
4 with Peace Officers Memorial Day on May 15, to honor law enforcement officers who
5 have lost their lives while serving and protecting us; and
6 Whereas, law enforcement encompasses all of those individuals who help detect
7 and prevent crime and enforce our laws; and
8 Whereas, law enforcement officers put their safety and lives at risk every day
9 to selflessly serve and protect our communities from crime and threats; and
10 Whereas, unfortunately, law enforcement officers are killed or harmed in the
11 line of duty, with over 25,000 officers having been killed in the line of duty in United
12 States history, four officers being killed in Wisconsin in 2023, and over 300 officers
13 being killed in Wisconsin's history; and
14 Whereas, there are approximately 13,400 law enforcement officers serving in
15 Wisconsin and almost 600 law enforcement agencies operating in the state; and

1 Whereas, Law Enforcement Appreciation Month offers an opportunity to
2 provide the recognition and support that law enforcement officers deserve for their
3 selfless dedication and hard work protecting the citizens and communities of
4 Wisconsin; and
5 Whereas, people are encouraged to show their support and appreciation of law
6 enforcement by taking various actions, including by sending a card of support to their
7 local police department, by sharing a positive law enforcement experience on social
8 media, by participating in Project Blue Light through displaying a blue light outside
9 of their house, and, most importantly, by thanking a police officer; and
10 Whereas, law enforcement holds an essential and valuable role in our society,
11 by constantly and tirelessly protecting our people and communities; now, therefore,
12 be it
13 Resolved by the senate, the assembly concurring, That May 2023 is
14 recognized as Law Enforcement Appreciation Month in Wisconsin; and, be it further
15 Resolved, That the members of the Assembly and Senate express their
16 tremendous gratitude and support to all law enforcement officers in the state of
17 Wisconsin and the nation for their sacrifices and selfless service in protecting our
18 communities.
