7 Subject: Legislature; legislator compensation and benefits; legislative structure
8 Statement of purpose of bill as introduced: This bill proposes to create a
9 legislative study committee to consider and make recommendations regarding
10 potential modifications to the structure and processes of the Vermont General
11 Assembly to ensure diversity, provide fair compensation and health insurance
12 to members, and ensure that the Legislative Branch is an equal branch of State
13 government with the Executive and Judicial Branches. The issues to be
14 considered by the study committee would include whether the General
15 Assembly should meet year-round and whether to pursue restructuring the
16 General Assembly in the Vermont Constitution, including evaluating changing
17 to a unicameral legislature or having fewer than the current 180 legislators, or
18 both.
