Offered by: Representative Nicoll of Ludlow Offered by: Senators Nitka, Clarkson, and McCormack Whereas, Herbert Van Guilder served as the U.S. Small Business Administration’s Vermont Administrator and as a presidential appointee to the National Advisory Council for Small Business, and Whereas, in the private and nonprofit sectors, Herbert Van Guilder was a small business proprietor, a director of the Ludlow Telephone Company and the Vermont National Bank,
and president of the Black River Historical Society, and Whereas, the Town of Ludlow benefited from his quarter century tenure on the Selectboard, and he presided perceptively as Village of Ludlow moderator, and Whereas, currently, Herbert Van Guilder is a Town of Ludlow justice of the peace, the local senior center’s representative to the town, and he sits on the town’s cemetery commission, where he is known for his strong and vociferous advocacy on its behalf, and Whereas, Herbert Van Guilder’s proudest municipal achievement is his instrumental role in the establishment of Ludlow’s Swap Shop, a garage located at the Ludlow Transfer Station, at which individuals may leave older books, children’s toys, furniture, and home goods that are still in good condition and that deserve a new home rather than being thrown into a dumpster, and Whereas, on March 31, 2022, the Town of Ludlow renamed the facility the Herbert Van Guilder Swap Shop in appreciation of his role in its creation, now therefore be it Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives:
That the General Assembly honors Ludlow civic leader Herbert Van Guilder, and be it further Resolved: That the Secretary of State be directed to send a copy of this resolution to
the Ludlow Transfer Station, the Ludlow Town Clerk, and to the members of Herbert Van Guilder’s family.
