Chapter 17, Part 13, relative to the safe storage of
BE IT ENACTED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF TENNESSEE:
SECTION 1. Tennessee Code Annotated, Title 39, Chapter 17, Part 13, is amended by
adding the following as a new section:
(a) Notwithstanding another law to the contrary and except as provided in
subsection (c), a person who purchases a firearm, or who applies for a permit to carry a handgun either openly or concealed under this part, including an application for the renewal of such a permit, shall sign an affidavit on a form prescribed by the department affirming that the applicant will, while not lawfully carrying the firearm, store the firearm:
(1) In a locked compartment;
(2) With a trigger locking device; or
(3) With a locked device rendering the firearm:
(A) Inaccessible to a person other than the owner or person in
lawful possession of the firearm; and
(B) Immovable from the stored location.
(b) A person who lawfully purchased a firearm, who is lawfully in possession of a firearm; or who has been issued a valid permit to carry a handgun under this part, on or
before October 1, 2023, shall comply with the storage requirements under subsection (a)
while the person is not lawfully carrying the firearm.
(c) A firearm stored in a vehicle of any type must be stored out of plain sight and in accordance with subdivision (a)(1) or (3).
SECTION 2. This act takes effect October 1, 2023, the public welfare requiring it.
