SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION 7009

A RESOLUTION to honor the memory of Lucille Roberts Buttram.
WHEREAS, the members of this General Assembly were greatly saddened to learn of
the passing of Lucille Roberts Buttram; and WHEREAS, Lucille Buttram was a compassionate and faithful woman who worked assiduously to improve the quality of life for her family, her friends, and her community in
numerous capacities; and WHEREAS, the daughter of H.J. and Grace Roberts, Mrs. Buttram was born on
September 11, 1932, in the Walnut Hill community of Roane County; and WHEREAS, Lucille Buttram was valedictorian of the 1950 graduating class at Harriman High School and earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Berea College in Kentucky; she went on to receive her Master of Science and Education Specialist degrees from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville; and WHEREAS, she began her career in education in 1954, teaching second grade at
Walnut Hill Elementary School, an entity situated in the same location that the house she was born in once stood; and WHEREAS, Mrs. Buttram became a supervisor of instruction in 1974 before becoming the first woman in the State to be appointed superintendent of schools in 1985; and WHEREAS, Lucille Buttram took her well-deserved retirement in 1988, following thirty-
three years in the education profession; she received a key to the City of Harriman and "Lucille Buttram Day" was celebrated in her honor; and WHEREAS, no stranger to success, Mrs. Buttram was honored at the first Roane County Founders Day in the first class of Roane Treasures, an honor reserved for citizens of

Roane County who have significantly contributed to the community through their dedicated service to public, private, and charitable organizations; and WHEREAS, she also poured herself into her community through various organizations,
including the Kiwanis Club, which she served as a member, a chair, and as president of various committees; additionally, she was recognized by Kiwanis International for her dedication to the organization; and WHEREAS, a woman of devout faith, Lucille Buttram was a former member of Walnut Hill Baptist Church and a member of Riverside Baptist Church; she taught Sunday School to
both children and adults alike and sang in the choir; and WHEREAS, Mrs. Buttram was also deeply devoted to her family and took great pride in
caring for them, always endeavoring to remain true to family values of the highest order; and WHEREAS, she will be sadly mourned but fondly remembered by her son, Claude E.
Buttram, III, and his wife, Ann; her granddaughter, Heather Buttram; her sister-in-law, Jo Roberts; and her niece, Shelia Bell, among several other nieces and nephews; and WHEREAS, in addition to her parents, Mrs. Buttram was preceded in death by her beloved husband of fifty-four years, Claude E. Buttram, Jr.; her brothers, Hobart, Jack, Jessie
B., Joe, and Reuben Roberts; and her sister, Gladys Bell; and WHEREAS, it is fitting that the members of this General Assembly should pause to
remember the bountiful life of this exceptional public servant and human being; now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED THIRTEENTH
GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF TENNESSEE, THE HOUSE OF
REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING, that we hereby honor the memory of Lucille Roberts Buttram, reflecting fondly upon her impeccable character and her stalwart commitment to living the examined life with courage and conviction.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that we express our sympathy and offer our condolences to the family and friends of Mrs. Buttram.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that an appropriate copy of this resolution be prepared for presentation with this final clause omitted from such copy and upon proper request made to
the appropriate clerk, the language appearing immediately following the State seal appear without House or Senate designation.
