SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION 801
By Bailey
A RESOLUTION to recognize Sam Gibbons for his service as a member of the United States Army.
WHEREAS, this General Assembly takes great pleasure in honoring those members of
the United States military who, throughout their distinguished careers, have served with honor,
bravery, and an unswerving commitment to duty; and WHEREAS, one such individual is Sam Gibbons, who served valiantly as a member of
the United States Army, both stateside and abroad, between 1944 and 1953; and WHEREAS, born on April 10, 1927, Mr. Gibbons entered Basic Training at Ft. Knox,
Kentucky, in 1944; two years later, he traveled by ship to Korea, serving there for nine months in what has since been called the "Forgotten War"; and WHEREAS, Sam Gibbons returned home and worked at the Algood Post Office until he
was called back into the Army in 1951; this time completing Basic Training in Ft. Jackson, South Carolina, he thereafter served for nineteen months in Nuremberg, Germany. His barracks there happened to be Hitler's former headquarters; and WHEREAS, returning home once again after his discharge in 1953, Mr. Gibbons resumed his job with the Algood Post Office, where he ably served until his retirement in 1986;
in addition to being entrusted to steward his community's mail, he owned and operated Algood Shell Service until 1982; and WHEREAS, throughout his distinguished career, Sam Gibbons served the United States and the State of Tennessee with honor and distinction, and it is wholly fitting that we recognize him for his sterling military service; now, therefore,
