HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION 643

A RESOLUTION to honor the memory of Charlie Moten of
Memphis.
WHEREAS, the members of this General Assembly were greatly saddened to learn of
the passing of Charlie Moten; and WHEREAS, Mr. Moten was an exemplary civic leader and consummate professional who worked assiduously to improve the quality of life for his fellow citizens in numerous capacities; and WHEREAS, born on July 20, 1935, to Ben and Lillian Moten, Charlie Moten professed Christ at an early age at Galilee Baptist Church in Tallulah, Louisiana, where he joined Walls Chapel under the leadership of Pastor Duley. It was during this time that he was crowned a deacon; and WHEREAS, he later moved to Memphis and joined Corinthian Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Pastor Smith; Mr. Moten served as deacon under Pastor Smith's tenure as well as those of successive church leaders, Pastor McBride and Pastor Mack; and WHEREAS, for more than sixty years, Mr. Moten worked as a truck driver, ultimately retiring from R&L Carriers; throughout his career, he earned the respect and admiration of all those who were fortunate to call him a colleague and friend; and WHEREAS, committed to serving his community, Mr. Moten became a 32nd Degree Mason in 1975, thereafter progressing to become a Shriner; and WHEREAS, Charlie Moten was also deeply devoted to his family, and he always endeavored to remain true to family values of the highest order; and WHEREAS, Mr. Moten is survived by his loving wife, Bessie Moten; brothers, Willie Moten and J.P. Moten; sister, Mattie Moten-Logan; children, Terry (Montrice) Moten, Jesse HJR0643

Moten, Eli (Laila) Moten, Jasper (Beverly) Moten, Eugene (Pamela) Kendrick, Terri Moten, and Mary (Elaine) Kendrick; and a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-
grandchildren, cousins, and extended family; and WHEREAS, Charlie Moten leaves behind an indelible legacy of integrity and probity in
public life, compassion and loyalty in private life, and diligence and dedication in all his chosen endeavors; and WHEREAS, it is fitting that the members of this General Assembly should pause to
remember the bountiful life of this exceptional human being; now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE HUNDRED
THIRTEENTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF TENNESSEE, THE SENATE
CONCURRING, that we honor the memory of Charlie Moten, reflecting fondly upon his impeccable character and his stalwart commitment to living the examined life with courage and conviction.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that we express our sympathy and offer our condolences to the family of Mr. Moten.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that an appropriate copy of this resolution be prepared for presentation with this final clause omitted from such copy and upon proper request made to
the appropriate clerk, the language appearing immediately following the State seal appear without House or Senate designation.
