Present law prohibits the sex of an individual from being changed on an original birth certificate as a result of sex change surgery. This changes present law to require the state registrar to amend a person's birth certificate upon receipt of a sworn statement by a physician, surgeon, endocrinologist, gynecologist, internist, neurologist, psychiatrist, psychologist, or social worker indicating that the individual's gender identity does not match the sex indicated on the person's original certificate of birth, the state registrar shall amend the certificate of birth to reflect the change.
This bill also authorizes courts to order a change in gender identity on a person's birth certificate under substantially the same conditions as courts are presently authorized to order name changes on birth certificates.
