This bill amends Section 16-60-2 of the General Laws in Chapter 16-60 to make changes to the Council on Elementary and Secondary Education. The governor will appoint eight members of the board of education to serve on the council until their term expires. The chair of the board of education will also serve on the council in a voting capacity. The bill also establishes a student advisory council consisting of one elected high school student representative from each public secondary school in Rhode Island. The student advisory council will meet at least quarterly and the chairperson will have voting powers. If a student is under 18 years old, they will be exempt from the senate advise and consent process. This bill will take effect upon passage.
