This bill amends the General Laws in Chapter 11-31 entitled "Obscene and Objectionable Publications and Shows." The bill adds new legal language to Section 11-31-1, which deals with the circulation of obscene publications and shows. The new language clarifies the definition of obscene material and adds that the work must lack serious literary, artistic, educational, governmental, political, or scientific value. The bill also adds new legal language to Section 11-31-10, which deals with the sale or exhibition of indecent publications, pictures, or articles to minors. The new language clarifies the definition of indecent material and adds that the material must lack serious literary, artistic, educational, governmental, political, or scientific value for minors. Additionally, the bill establishes an affirmative defense for employees of schools, museums, or libraries who are prosecuted under these sections. The bill takes effect upon passage.
