This bill amends the penalties for second and third offenses related to the possession of marijuana. It specifies that a person convicted of a second offense may be imprisoned for up to twice the term authorized, fined up to twice the amount authorized, or both. It also clarifies that an offense is considered a second offense if the offender has previously been convicted under this chapter or any other state or federal statute related to drugs.

Similarly, a person convicted of a third or subsequent offense may be imprisoned for up to three times the term authorized, fined up to three times the amount authorized, or both. An offense is considered a third or subsequent offense if the offender has been convicted twice under this chapter or any other state or federal statute related to drugs.

This bill aims to align the penalties for marijuana possession offenses with the penalties outlined in the Rhode Island cannabis act.
