This bill amends Section 11-47-20 of the General Laws in Chapter 11-47 entitled "Weapons" to allow sworn members of the Rhode Island state police to use silencers or other devices to deaden or muffle the sound of a firearm while acting within the scope of their official duties and training as part of the tactical team, under the supervision of the colonel of the state police or designee. The bill specifies that this exemption does not apply to the manufacture, sale, purchase, or possession of silencers by individuals other than sworn members of the state police. Violations of this section would be punished by imprisonment for not less than one year and one day. The bill would take effect upon passage.
