This bill, titled the "Equity Impact Statement Act," would amend Title 42 of the General Laws to require that all legislation submitted in the general assembly include an equity impact statement. The purpose of the equity impact statement is to address the impact that the legislation will have on Rhode Island residents based on their race, color, ethnicity, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, disability, age, or country of ancestral origin. The equity impact statement would be a simple and understandable statement that demonstrates that the bill sponsor has taken into account the potential positive or negative impact of the legislation on different populations. The statement would also reference historic disparities and existing efforts to address those disparities. If there are no discernable impacts based on the protected classifications, the equity impact statement may state that. This act would take effect upon passage.
