This bill amends current law to require health insurance contracts, plans, or policies in Rhode Island to include coverage for equipment and supplies for the treatment of diabetes, including blood glucose monitors, insulin, and insulin pumps. It also requires coverage for diabetes self-management education and education relating to medical nutrition therapy. The bill sets a cap on the amount that a covered person is required to pay for insulin administration and glucose monitoring equipment and supplies, at no more than $25 per supply lasting 30 days or per item intended to be used for longer than 30 days. This coverage is not subject to any annual deductible. The bill also extends these requirements to health insurance plans offered by nonprofit hospital service corporations and nonprofit medical service corporations.

Additionally, the bill prohibits any deductible for the equipment and supplies and requires the same cap on cost for health insurance plans purchased or renewed by the state of Rhode Island. The bill will take effect upon passage.
