This bill amends Section 27-7-2.1 of the General Laws to require mandatory uninsured motorist coverage for motor vehicles registered or garaged in the state. The coverage must be provided in or supplemental to the policy and must be equal to the insured's bodily injury liability limits. The named insured has the option to select a limit lower than the bodily injury liability coverage, but not lower than the limits set forth in § 31-47-2(13)(i)(A). The bill also clarifies that uninsured motorist coverage includes coverage for underinsured motorists.

The bill also allows the insured to reject uninsured motorist coverage for property damage if they have collision coverage for their vehicle. The bill establishes a $200 deductible for property damage caused by collision, unless otherwise agreed. The bill also addresses subrogation rights and the ability of an insured to collect coverage for uninsured motorists under multiple policies.

This bill will take effect on January 1, 2024, and will apply to new or renewed insurance policies issued or renewed after that date.
