This bill repeals sections of the General Laws related to curriculum and replaces them with new language. The new language inserts requirements for the development of statewide academic standards and curriculum frameworks, including an open and consultative process and consideration of diverse perspectives. The bill also requires regular review and evaluation of the standards and frameworks.

Additionally, the bill removes several sections of current law related to curriculum frameworks and replaces them with a new section on high-quality curriculum and materials. The new section requires the council on elementary and secondary education to identify curriculum and materials for mathematics, English language arts, and science and technology that are aligned with academic standards and of high quality. Local education agencies are required to select one of the identified curricula and materials by a certain deadline and implement them in their schools. LEAs may request a waiver to use a different curriculum, but the waiver process includes several requirements. LEAs are also required to develop and execute a curriculum implementation plan.
