This bill amends Section 45-21-54 of the General Laws in Chapter 45-21, which relates to the retirement of municipal employees. The bill increases the number of working days a retired member of the system can reenter the service without interruption of pension benefits from 75 days to 90 days in a calendar year. However, once the 90-day period is exceeded, pension payments are suspended. This rule does not apply to police officers working private details paid for by a nongovernmental entity. If a retired member continues to work beyond the 90-day period, their annuity is temporarily suspended and they are not eligible for pension credit for the additional service. However, retired members are still permitted to serve as elected city or town council members or school committee members and continue to receive their retirement allowance for service other than that as a council member or school committee member. The bill would take effect upon passage.
