This bill amends Section 17-14-7 of the General Laws in Chapter 17-14 entitled "Nomination of Party and Independent Candidates." The amendment changes the number of signers required for nomination papers for various elected offices. For the 2020 election only, the number of signers required for nomination papers for candidates for the party nomination or independent candidates for United States senator is reduced from 1,000 to 500. Similarly, the number of signers required for nomination papers for candidates for the party nomination or independent candidates for representative in Congress is reduced from 500 to 250 for the 2020 election only. The amendment also removes the requirement for unopposed candidates who file valid declarations of candidacy to file nominating signatures for certification. This change will take effect on January 1, 2024.
