A RESOLUTION
1 Recognizing the month of April 2023 as "National Fair Housing
2 Month" in Pennsylvania.
3 WHEREAS, The Fair Housing Act, enacted April 11, 1968, one of
4 the most important components of our national civil rights
5 policy, prohibits discrimination in housing on the basis of
6 race, national origin, religion, sex, family status and
7 disability; and
8 WHEREAS, This landmark piece of legislation continues to
9 serve as a powerful statement about the values of equality,
10 equity and dignity that we strive to uphold and the places where
11 we still have work to do to fulfill our promise as a nation; and
12 WHEREAS, Access to quality housing is the foundation for
13 achieving better educational, employment and health outcomes, as
14 well as one of the most important ways that families build
15 wealth that can be passed down through generations; and
16 WHEREAS, Acts of housing discrimination and barriers to equal
17 housing opportunity are repugnant to a common sense of decency
1 and fairness; and
2 WHEREAS, The Pennsylvania Affordable Housing Act offers
3 additional protections beyond the Federal Fair Housing Act and
4 certain local fair housing ordinances expand protections based
5 on sexual orientation, gender identity, marital status, source
6 of income and other protected classes; and
7 WHEREAS, Despite the work of Federal, State and local
8 agencies in reducing housing discrimination using the Fair
9 Housing Act and other important laws, we have a long way to go
10 to ensure safe, decent and affordable housing for all
11 Pennsylvanians; and
12 WHEREAS, People of color are significantly more likely than
13 white people to experience evictions and homelessness, the
14 result of centuries of structural racism that continues today,
15 and we cannot address racial inequities without addressing
16 housing; therefore be it
17 RESOLVED, That the Senate recognize the month of April 2023
18 as "National Fair Housing Month" in Pennsylvania.
