8 AS INTRODUCED
9 A Concurrent Resolution to raise awareness and
encourage research for diffuse intrinsic pontine
10 glioma and pediatric cancers; designating December 11
as Addie's Day.

13 WHEREAS, on December 11, 2012, Addalyn "Addie" Bourasaw was
14 born; and
15 WHEREAS, on February 25, 2021, Addie Bourasaw was diagnosed
16 with diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma (DIPG); and
17 WHEREAS, on April 3, 2022, Addie Bourasaw passed away from her
18 diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma (DIPG) brain tumor; and
19 WHEREAS, diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma (DIPG) affects 200 to
20 400 children in the United States each year with certain regularity;
21 and
22 WHEREAS, brain tumors are the leading cause of cancer-related
23 death in children; and

1 WHEREAS, DIPG is the second most common malignant brain tumor of
2 childhood; and
3 WHEREAS, DIPG is the leading cause of childhood death due to
4 brain tumors; and
5 WHEREAS, the median survival time is only nine (9) months
6 postdiagnosis with treatment; and
7 WHEREAS, five-year survival is less than one percent (1%); and
8 WHEREAS, given the age at diagnosis and the average life
9 expectancy, the number of life years lost annually because of DIPG
10 is approximately twenty-four thousand (24,000) years of person life
11 lost (calculated as the number of children diagnosed by average of
12 male and female life expectancy from that median age, 300 x 80 =
13 24,000 years of person life lost annually); and
14 WHEREAS, prognosis has not improved for children with DIPG in
15 more than forty (40) years;
16 WHEREAS, federal funding for research for pediatric cancer
17 should be increased to address the level of unmet medical need for
18 this vulnerable population; and
19 WHEREAS, the Legislature designates the 11th day of December as
20 "Addie's Day" to raise awareness and encourage research into cures
21 for diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma (DIPG) and pediatric cancers in
22 general.

1 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES
2 OF THE 1ST SESSION OF THE 59TH OKLAHOMA LEGISLATURE, THE SENATE
3 CONCURRING THEREIN:
4 THAT the Oklahoma Legislature supports the designation of the
5 birthday of Addie Bourasaw, the 11th day of December, as "Addie's
6 Day"; encourages all people of the United States to become more
7 informed about diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma (DIPG) pediatric
8 brain cancer, and the current challenges to the medical research
9 system in designating sufficient research funding for pediatric
10 cancers; supports expanded research to better understand DIPG,
11 develop effective treatments, and provide comprehensive care for
12 children with DIPG and their families; and encourages public and
13 private sources of research funding to elevate their consideration
14 of the mortality rate of a type of cancer, as well as the life-years
15 lost, as significant factors to be considered during the grant
16 application process.
