TITLE OF BILL:
An act to repeal subdivision 6 of section 308 of the vehicle and traffic
law, relating to periodic inspections for police vehicles
 
PURPOSE:
Removes the exemption currently afforded to police vehicles from the
requirements of the vehicle and traffic law governing the safety
inspection of all other motor vehicles.
 
SUMMARY OF PROVISIONS:
Section one amends section 308 of the vehicle and traffic law with
regard to the periodic inspection of motor vehicles by repealing the
provision of law that exempts police vehicles from said inspection
requirement.
Section 2 establishes the effective date.
 
JUSTIFICATION:
The long established requirement that motor vehicles be inspected for
safety annually serves to protect not only the motor vehicle operator
but also the public at-large. Moreover, this mandate aims to ensure, in
part, that brakes; steering; wheel alignment; lights and other safety
equipment are in proper and safe working order.
Police vehicles, perhaps-more than-the motor vehicles driven by the
necessitates the inclusion of these vehicles in the annual safety
inspection program. This legislation will do just that, ultimately
protecting the public and the law enforcement officials who utilize the
vehicles to perform their sworn duties.
