ONE HUNDRED SEVENTH LEGISLATURE

LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION 39

WHEREAS, Amanda Gorman of Los Angeles, California, became the first Los Angeles Youth Poet Laureate in 2014 and the first National Youth Poet Laureate of the United States in 2017; and WHEREAS, she is the youngest known poet to present at a presidential inauguration; and WHEREAS, Amanda Gorman recited her original poem, "The Hill We Climb", at the fifty-ninth presidential inauguration on January 20, 2021; and WHEREAS, her poem is a call for unity and reconciliation in the American public; and WHEREAS, she derived inspiration for her poem after studying great American leaders, including Frederick Douglass, Abraham Lincoln, and Martin Luther King, Jr.; and WHEREAS, she overcame a speech impediment to become a performing poet laureate and orator.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MEMBERS OF THE ONE HUNDRED SEVENTH
LEGISLATURE OF NEBRASKA, FIRST SESSION:
1. That the Nebraska Unicameral Legislature congratulates Amanda Gorman for overcoming many challenges, achieving historic success, and presenting her poetry at the inauguration of the forty-sixth President of the United States,
Joseph R. Biden, Jr.
2. That a copy of this resolution be delivered to Amanda Gorman.
