1 A BILL FOR AN ACT relating to the Nebraska State Capitol Preservation and
2 Restoration Act; to amend section 72-2201, Reissue Revised Statutes
3 of Nebraska; to require the display of tribal flags in the State
4 Capitol as prescribed; to harmonize provisions; and to repeal the
5 original section.
6 Be it enacted by the people of the State of Nebraska,

1 Section 1. Section 72-2201, Reissue Revised Statutes of Nebraska, is
2 amended to read:
3 72-2201 Sections 72-2201 to 72-2214 and section 2 of this act shall
4 be known and may be cited as the Nebraska State Capitol Preservation and
5 Restoration Act.
6 Sec. 2. (1)(a) The Clerk of the Legislature shall cause to be
7 displayed within the George W. Norris Legislative Chamber flags
8 representing the four federally recognized tribes with headquarters in
9 Nebraska: the Omaha Tribe of Nebraska, the Ponca Tribe of Nebraska, the
10 Santee Sioux Nation, and the Winnebago Tribe of Nebraska.
11 (b) The Commission on Indian Affairs shall obtain such flags through
12 donations from the tribes and shall be responsible for replacing such
13 flags.
14 (c) The Clerk of the Legislature shall approve placement locations
15 within the George W. Norris Legislative Chamber. The size, proportion,
16 and placement of such flags shall be similar to that of the flag of the
17 United States and the flag of the State of Nebraska.
18 (2)(a) The State Capitol administrator shall cause to be displayed
19 in the Memorial Chamber on the fourteenth floor of the State Capitol the
20 flags of any Indian tribes with historic and regional connections to
21 Nebraska.
22 (b) The Commission on Indian Affairs shall designate the tribes with
23 historic and regional connections to Nebraska and the flags to be
24 displayed under subdivision (2)(a) of this section. The Commission on
25 Indian Affairs shall obtain such flags through donations from the tribes
26 and shall be responsible for replacing such flags.
27 (c) The Nebraska Capitol Commission shall approve placement
28 locations in the Memorial Chamber.
29 Sec. 3. Original section 72-2201, Reissue Revised Statutes of
30 Nebraska, is repealed.
