1 A concurrent resolution directing the Legislative Management to consider studying metabolic
2 syndrome and its associated costs, trends, and causes, including proposals for reducing the
3 prevalence and the associated costs through public policy and initiatives.
4 WHEREAS, metabolic syndrome is a multifactorial disease with multiple risk factors that
5 arises from insulin resistance accompanying abnormal adipose deposition and function; and
6 WHEREAS, metabolic syndrome is a common cause of both morbidity and mortality, as it
7 comprises a combination of risk factors for coronary heart disease, as well as for diabetes, fatty
8 liver, and several cancers; and
9 WHEREAS, risk factors for metabolic syndrome, such as obesity, high blood pressure, and
10 elevated blood lipid levels, can increase a person's health care costs nearly 1.6-fold, or about
11 $2,000 per year, and for each additional risk factor those costs rise an average of 24 percent;
12 and
13 WHEREAS, the percentage of people in the United States with metabolic syndrome has
14 risen to 37 percent;
15 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF
16 NORTH DAKOTA, THE SENATE CONCURRING THEREIN:
17 That the Legislative Management consider studying metabolic syndrome and its associated
18 costs, trends, and causes, including proposals for reducing the prevalence and the associated
19 costs through public policy and initiatives.
20 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Legislative Management report its findings and
21 recommendations, together with any legislation required to implement the recommendations, to
22 the Sixty-eighth Legislative Assembly.
