2 AN ACT ADOPTING THE LINVILLE CAVERNS SPIDER AS THE STATE'S OFFICIAL
3 SPIDER.
4 Whereas, scaffold web spiders can be found throughout the United States, most often
5 in caves and rock crevices near rivers and streams; and
6 Whereas, one species of scaffold web spider known as the Linville Caverns spider
7 (Nesticus carolinensis) can be found in the Linville Caverns in western North Carolina; and
8 Whereas, the Linville Caverns spider is unique to North Carolina because it has not
9 been found in any other place in the world; and
10 Whereas, it is only fitting that the Linville Caverns spider be designated as the State's
11 official spider; Now, therefore,
12 The General Assembly of North Carolina enacts:
13 SECTION 1. Chapter 145 of the General Statutes is amended by adding a new
14 section to read:
15 "§ 145-52. State spider.
16 The Linville Caverns spider (Nesticus carolinensis) is adopted as the official State spider of
17 North Carolina."
18 SECTION 2. This act is effective when it becomes law.
