7 A BILL FOR AN ACT ENTITLED: “AN ACT ESTABLISHING THE TERRY SPOTTED WOLF, SR. MEMORIAL
8 HIGHWAY IN BIG HORN COUNTY; DIRECTING THE DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION TO INSTALL
9 SIGNS AND TO INCLUDE THE MEMORIAL HIGHWAY ON THE NEXT PUBLICATION OF THE STATE
10 HIGHWAY MAP; AND PROVIDING AN IMMEDIATE EFFECTIVE DATE.”

12 WHEREAS, Terry Spotted Wolf, Sr. was born and raised in Montana; and
13 WHEREAS, after completing the Montana State Law Enforcement Police Academy in 1976, Terry
14 Spotted Wolf, Sr. joined the Northern Cheyenne Bureau of Indian Affairs Police Department; and
15 WHEREAS, Terry Spotted Wolf, Sr. served on the police force for more than a decade as an officer,
16 sergeant, lieutenant, police captain, and chief of police; and
17 WHEREAS, Terry Spotted Wolf, Sr. served with distinction, earning two awards for bravery and
18 receiving a certification of commendation award from the American Legion and many letters of commendation
19 from his superior officers; and
20 WHEREAS, Terry Spotted Wolf, Sr. was selected as police officer of the year in 1979; and
21 WHEREAS, while driving a patrol car one morning, Terry Spotted Wolf, Sr. heard over the radio that
22 another Bureau of Indian Affairs officer was pursuing a vehicle with a suspected drunk driver; and
23 WHEREAS, Terry Spotted Wolf, Sr. immediately turned his patrol car around and began driving to
24 assist his fellow officer in the high-speed pursuit; and
25 WHEREAS, Terry Spotted Wolf, Sr. was killed in the line of duty when his patrol car was involved in an
26 accident, causing Terry Spotted Wolf, Sr. to be fatally injured; and
27 WHEREAS, the 67th Legislature of the State of Montana honors Terry Spotted Wolf, Sr.

1 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MONTANA:

3 NEW SECTION. Section 1. Terry Spotted Wolf, Sr. memorial highway. (1) There is established
4 the Terry Spotted Wolf, Sr. memorial highway on the existing U.S. highway 212 from mile marker 26 to mile
5 marker 27.
6 (2) The department shall design and install appropriate signs marking the location of the Terry
7 Spotted Wolf, Sr. memorial highway.
8 (3) Maps that identify roadways in the state must be updated to include the location of the Terry
9 Spotted Wolf, Sr. memorial highway when the department updates and publishes the state maps.

11 NEW SECTION. Section 2. Codification instruction. [Section 1] is intended to be codified as an
12 integral part of Title 60, chapter 1, part 2, and the provisions of Title 60, chapter 1, part 2, apply to [section 1].

14 NEW SECTION. Section 3. Effective date. [This act] is effective on passage and approval.
