HB 1922 -- DEPARTMENT OF CORRECTIONS OVERSIGHT COMMITTEE

This bill creates the "Department of Corrections Oversight Committee". The eight member committee consists of four members of the General Assembly, one member appointed by the President Pro Tem of the Senate, the Minority Floor Leader of the Senate, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, and the Minority Floor Leader of the House of Representatives, with the remaining members appointed by the Governor and approved by the Senate. Membership qualifications are specified in the bill.

The Committee will investigate complaints and issues within the Department of Corrections and may monitor and collect data as specified in the bill including data on inmate deaths, suicides, physical assaults in custody, staffing concerns, and other matters. The committee may also monitor compliance with federal and state laws and regulations within the Department and decisions of the Parole Board.

On or before December 31, 2022, and each December 31st thereafter the board will submit a report to the General Assembly.

The provisions of the bill expire on December 31, 2027.
