HB 2382 -- HEALTH CARE PRACTITIONER TITLES

SPONSOR: Plocher

This bill limits the use of titles in advertisements for health care practitioners. The bill requires that health care practitioners only use the appropriate titles or specialty designations in advertisements, and that advertisements include the health care practitioner's full name. The advertisement cannot include any fraudulent misrepresentation. Any statement or implication that the health care practitioner is "board certified" must include the entire name of the board that issued the certification.

Health care practitioners must display a copy of his or her Missouri license in a prominent place in an office area that is visible to all current and prospective patients. If the practitioner sees patients outside of a health care facility, the copy of the practitioner's license must be no smaller than the original license and must be of sufficient size to be visible and apparent to patients. Health care practitioners seeing patients must wear a name badge or identification with his or her name, type of license, and, if applicable, medical staff position.

The bill lists terms that a person who is not a licensed physician cannot use with the intent to represent that the person practices medicine or is a licensed physician.

The bill states that advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs) can only use certain titles or designations, as appropriate to his or her training and education. No other person who is not an APRN can use these terms to indicate that he or she is an APRN.
