This bill defines "private schools" as any non-public school or school operated by a religious organization and specifies that private schools shall not be required to increase their minimum wage annually as required by current law.
This bill is the same as HCS HB 763 (2019).
PROPONENTS: Supporters say that private schools are effected by the state mandatory minimum wage increases, and that the exemption for public entities should also apply to private schools.
Testifying for the bill was Representative Remole.
OPPONENTS: Those who oppose the bill say that the public overwhelmingly supports the minimum wage increases and that giving specific industries a carve out would be unfair and not reflective of the will of the voters.
Testifying against the bill were Service Employees International Union; United Steel Workers; and Loren Lasch.
