HB 1402 -- JOINT COMMITTEE ON MEDIA LITERACY

This bill establishes the "Joint Committee on Media Literacy" comprised of 14 members; three to be appointed by the Speaker of the House of Representatives, three appointed by the President Pro Tem of the Senate, and eight members appointed by the Governor as outlined in the bill.

The purpose of the committee shall be to conduct a study on teaching "media literacy", as defined in the bill as the set of skills required to critically assess, analyze, create, and participate in the information and media environment in all of its formats including, but not limited to, advertising, film and television, journalism, music and radio, magazine and book publishing, websites, and mobile applications.

The committee will meet at least once during each legislative session, and organize as outlined in the bill. The committee shall also complete and submit a final report to the Governor, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, and the President Pro Tem of the Senate, which shall include recommendations and guidance on best practices as outlined in the bill by February 1, 2021.
