HJR 55 -- FUNDING FOR RELIGIOUS EDUCATIONAL PURPOSES

SPONSOR: Shumake

Upon voter approval, this proposed Constitutional amendment eliminates the current prohibition on the use of public funds through appropriation or through a grant of personal or real property, for the benefit of any religious or sectarian educational purpose. The resolution prohibits the denial of the general state benefits of any education program, funding, or other support on the basis of religious identity or belief as long as the benefits comply with the requirements of the First Amendment to the United States Constitution.
