HOUSE RESOLUTION NO.111
Reps. Glanville, Arbit, Bezotte, Bierlein, Brabec, Byrnes,
Fitzgerald, Haadsma, Hill, Morse, Paiz and Rheingans offered the
following resolution:
1 A resolution to declare May 17, 2023, as Older Michiganians
2 Day in the state of Michigan.
3 Whereas, 2.6 million Michiganians are age 60 or older,
4 equating to one of every four citizens being an older adult as
5 defined by the Older Americans Act. There are more older adults in
6 the state than children in Pre-K through twelve schools; and
7 Whereas, Ten thousand Americans celebrate their 65th birthday
8 every day and become eligible for Medicare; and
9 Whereas, Older Michiganians are critical to Michigan's
10 economy, workforce, educational system, faith-based institutions,
11 charitable organizations, and institutions of government; and

1 Whereas, Many amongst them, were born just as the Great
2 Depression was ending and experienced a childhood defined by the
3 trauma of a World War. They fought in Korea and Vietnam to help
4 stop the spread of Communism and protect the principles of
5 democracy around the world. They raised their own children under
6 the constant threat of the Cold War, led our state into the 21st
7 century, advocated for civil rights, and have now lived through the
8 worldwide COVID-19 pandemic; and
9 Whereas, Older adults deserve our utmost respect and gratitude
10 for their many contributions to our communities. Older citizens
11 play vital leadership, volunteer, and mentoring roles all across
12 our great state. Their lifetime contributions are immense and
13 immeasurable in sum, while also being deeply personal, impactful,
14 and meaningful on an individual basis; and
15 Whereas, Older adults are one of our state's greatest
16 resources for understanding our past and improving our future. They
17 are truly a foundation upon which we can build a better tomorrow;
18 and
19 Whereas, This invaluable group of citizens is being honored
20 and admired for their many years of service in communities large
21 and small across the entire state of Michigan. They have been an
22 indispensable source of knowledge and inspiration throughout the
23 years; now, therefore, be it
24 Resolved by the House of Representatives, That the members of
25 this legislative body declare May 17, 2023, as Older Michiganians
26 Day in the state of Michigan. We honor our state’s population of
27 older citizens.
