SUMMARY:
House Bill 4082 would amend the Michigan Memorial Highway Act to designate I-96 in Ionia
County from mile marker 76 to mile marker 77 as the “Barry Lyn Hause Memorial Highway.”
Proposed MCL 250.1023b
BACKGROUND:
Barry Lyn Hause was born in Lansing, Michigan, in 1965 to Nancy Hause Martin and Gerald
G. Hause. A graduate of Holt High School, Hause was an operating engineer employed with
the road construction company C & D Hughes. On the evening of September 24, 2019,
appropriately attired in a marked one-line construction zone on eastbound I-96, Barry Hause
sat on a concrete cutting device carving a cement line for pavement repair just east of the Kent
Street exit near Portland. At approximately 11 p.m., his machinery was struck by a car. He
sustained critical injuries and was flown by helicopter to Sparrow Hospital, where he died of
his injuries on September 30. He was 54 years old.
Dedicating a portion of highway I-96 in Ionia County would be an appropriate way to recognize
and honor the service of Barry Lyn Hause and his ultimate sacrifice to provide exceptional
work performance and safer roads for the residents of Michigan.
FISCAL IMPACT:
Section 2 of the Michigan Memorial Highway Act indicates that the state transportation
department shall provide for the erection of suitable markers indicating the name of the
highway only “when sufficient private contributions are received to completely cover the cost
of erecting and maintaining those markers.” As a result, the bill has no state or local fiscal
impact.
POSITIONS:
The Michigan Department of Transportation indicated a neutral position on the bill. (6-20-23)
