The bill would amend Chapter XVI (Miscellaneous Provisions) of the Code of Criminal Procedure to delete the cap on the amount of a reward that a county may offer for the arrest and conviction  of a person who committed a crime or escaped from a penal institution.

The Code allow a county board of commissioners to offer and pay out of the county's general fund a maximum award of $2,000 for the arrest and conviction, or for information leading to the arrest and conviction, of any person or people having committed a crime within the county or having escaped from any penal institution. The bill would delete the cap on the amount of the reward.

The Code specifies that the powers granted above could be exercised by the finance committee of a county board of commissioners when the board is not in session. Under the bill, this provision would apply upon the request of a reward by the sheriff or the prosecuting attorney of the county.

The bill would take effect 90 days after its enactment.

FISCAL IMPACT

The bill would have no fiscal impact on the State and no direct fiscal impact on local governments. The bill's provisions are permissive, meaning any fiscal impact would be determined by voluntary actions taken by county boards of commissioners.
