JOINT RESOLUTION EXPRESSING REGRET OVER THE LINE-
OF-DUTY DEATH OF HANCOCK COUNTY SHERIFF'S DEPUTY
LUKE GROSS
WHEREAS, Deputy Luke Gross served with the sheriff's office in Hancock County for
18 years and previously served in the police departments of Winthrop and Sabattus; and
WHEREAS, Deputy Gross was profoundly committed to law enforcement, believing in
his job and in service, caring deeply for the people whom he served and contributing to his
community both through his work and through participating in local charitable events; and
WHEREAS, in addition to his devotion to his professional duties, Deputy Gross had a
passion for helping young people, serving as a camp leader at Camp POSTCARD and on the
Hancock County School Board, working in local schools as part of the D.A.R.E. program and
helping with the Deer Isle-Stonington High School Every 15 Minutes program, which educates
students about the dangers of intoxicated and distracted driving; and
WHEREAS, Deputy Gross was struck and killed by a motor vehicle while responding to
a call in the early hours of September 23, 2021; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED: That We, the Members of the One Hundred and Thirtieth Legislature now
assembled in the Second Special Session, on behalf of the people we represent, express regret
over the line-of-duty death of Deputy Luke Gross and our admiration for his honorable work
in law enforcement and the community, and we send our condolences to his family.
