JOINT RESOLUTION COMMEMORATING THE ARMENIAN
GENOCIDE OF 1915 TO 1923
WHEREAS, from April 24, 1915 to 1923, a campaign was launched by the Turkish regime
of the Ottoman Empire against the Armenian people; and
WHEREAS, this campaign was an attempt to annihilate the entire Armenian people and
resulted in the deaths of more than 1.5 million Armenians; and
WHEREAS, many of the survivors settled in the State of Maine and their heirs have made
significant contributions to the State over the last 106 years; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED: That We, the members of the One Hundred and Thirtieth Legislature now
assembled in the First Special Session, pause in our deliberations to join our citizens of
Armenian heritage in remembering the 106th Anniversary of the Armenian Genocide and to
express our deepest sympathy to the families of those who perished; and be it further
RESOLVED: That we commemorate April 24, 2021 as Armenian Genocide
Remembrance Day in memory of the victims of the Armenian Genocide and in honor of the
survivors and their descendants and urge all citizens of the State to join in this solemn
remembrance.
