Anne Arundel County - Alcoholic Beverages - Salaries of Inspectors
This bill raises the salaries of the chief inspector, deputy chief inspector, and general
inspectors employed by the Anne Arundel County Board of License Commissioners. The
bill takes effect July 1, 2020.
Fiscal Summary
State Effect: None.
Local Effect: Anne Arundel County expenditures increase beginning in FY 2021 by
$22,000 due to the increase in salaries and fringe benefits. Local revenues are not affected.
Small Business Effect: Minimal.
Analysis
Current Law/Background: In Anne Arundel County, the chief inspector has an annual
salary of $10,000, the deputy chief inspector has an annual salary of $8,000, and each of
the 18 general inspectors have an annual salary of $6,000.
The board holds hearings on license applications once a month.
Anne Arundel County advises that inspectors generally visit establishments twice a year
for routine inspections. If any documents are missing or the establishment is otherwise in
violation, the inspector returns later for a follow-up inspection. If the establishment has not
resolved the violation, the inspector may again return for an additional follow-up
inspection, or the inspector may write a formal violation notice. The decision of writing a
violation is at the discretion of the inspector. Typically, each inspector is responsible for
30 to 40 establishments.
In fiscal 2019, there were 553 alcoholic beverages licenses issued in Anne Arundel County.
Local Fiscal Effect: The bill increases the annual salary of the chief inspector, deputy
chief inspector, and 18 other inspectors by $1,000 of the board. The increase in salaries,
including additional fringe benefits, results in an increase of Anne Arundel County
expenditures by $21,530 annually.
