This bill establishes a new Department of Public Works in the Town of Barre, effectively repealing Chapter 56 of the Acts of 1988 and abolishing the public works commission previously established by that act. The new Department will consolidate the functions of the former highway, water, sewer, and parks and recreation departments. The Department will be supervised by a superintendent appointed by the select board, with input from the town administrator, and will have the authority to create employment contracts that outline salary, benefits, and other employment conditions.

The bill ensures that existing contracts and liabilities remain unaffected by the repeal of the previous law, with the new Department and its superintendent recognized as the lawful successors to the abolished offices and departments. All records, property, and equipment from the previous departments will be transferred to the new Department of Public Works by operation of law. The act will take effect immediately upon passage.
