RÉSUMÉ DIGEST
ACT 598 (HB 131) 2024 Regular Session Boyer
Existing law provides relative to breeder awards in horse racing.
Prior law required a licensee authorized to conduct a horse race to pay 10% of the winner's
share of the purse of each race won by accredited La. bred horses.
New law instead requires that the 10% be from the total purse of each race earned by
accredited La. bred horses.
Existing law requires that the sum shall be paid by the licensee within 30 days after the close
of the race meeting to the respective breeders of the winners of such races as a breeder's
award.
New law retains existing law that states that the sum shall be paid by the licensee within 30
days after the close of the race meeting.
New law further requires that the sum shall be paid to the respective breeders of the first,
second, and third place winners of such races as a breeder's award.
Existing law exempts new and existing law from applying to races written exclusively for
accredited La. bred horses which shall be paid a breeder's award by the La. State Racing
Commission out of funds provided for this purpose pursuant to the provisions of existing
law.
Effective August 1, 2024.
